Cafe Guide Amsterdam, Europe

Amsterdam, Europe

One has to admit that Amsterdam is much more famous (or infamous?) for its coffee shops, rather than for its cafes. Yet the Netherlands, as many other countries with a colonialist past, has some good coffee brands (the most famous being ""Douwe Egberts""), and the Dutch are known to be a coffee-loving nation (with an average annual consumption of about 1,300 cups per person!). Amsterdam has cafes and pubs (and mostly a mix of the two) in almost every corner on every canal. Some are very old, dark looking (both because of the dark wood interior, and also from years of tobacco smoking inside. these are called 'bruin cafes'), some are very spacious, comfortable and well-lit (known as 'grand cafes') and most are pretty small places, usually serving also food and snacks, and many times also alcoholic drinks. World-class, globally inspired eateries in a city, which is made for walking and bicycling. If you prefer to stroll to find the best coffee, cruise Utrechtsestraat, Nieuwmarkt, the 'Nine Streets' area (the thoroughfares linking Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht and Herengracht between Leidsegracht and Raadhuisstraat) and Reguliersdwarsstraat if you want something posher.
