Cafe Guide Ljubljana, Europe
Ljubljana is one of the loveliest little cities in Central Europe and boasts its share of interesting cafes, bars and restaurants, mostly strewn along the river spanned by many bridges including the architecturally stunning Triple Bridge designed by Jože Plečnik. The city itself is surrounded by hills affording breathtaking views of the Julian Alps and Triglav Mountain, Slovenia's highest peak, which is sometimes visible from the castle tower overlooking the town centre.
Bordered by Austria, Italy and Croatia, Slovenia is heavily influenced by the cuisines of these countries but possibly even more so by the Balkans due in part to its geographic location as well as to its large immigrant population from the former Yugoslavia. Southern Slav specialties include Burek, a popular dish consisting of filo pastry stuffed with meat or cheese and spinach; cevapcici (minced meat kebabs) and pleskavica (spicy hamburgers). All are usually served with generous portion of ajvar, a red pepper spread. Slivovic, or plum vodka, is the spirit of the Balkans and is not in short supply in Slovenia. However, Turkish coffee is on the decline here and is being increasingly replaced on menus with Italian-brand coffees like Illy, which incidentally happens to be a product of Trieste, a region that once belonged to this Slavonic country.
Also, almost every single café in Ljubljana serves premium soft ice-cream in dozens of flavours. In fact, some people call Slovenia the "ice-cream capital of Europe." People even eat it as a meal!
