Gypsy House, 1279 Marion St, Denver

Gypsy House Café is a funky corner coffee shop with a varied play list, an eclectic interior and a staff to match.  It’s a great spot to soak up a sunny Denver day on the patio, or cozy up inside on a sofa.  They offer free WiFi, but there is a limit of 30 minutes you can be plugged into their outlets (not sure why).

Often I get their homemade chai, but today I sampled the Turkish coffee.  It was served on a platter, in a silver teapot, with a small cup and saucer.  One of the owners described it as strong like espresso, without the buzzing after affect.  They sweeten it lightly with sugar.  I thoroughly enjoyed it, smooth and just the right amount of sweetness.  It was the perfect complement to their homemade baklava – rich, dense and gooey.

During my visit, one of the sisters did a tarot card reading in a small corner in the back.  I’ve always been intrigued, and, after catching bits of the reading, am even more inclined to partake.  Appointment and $25 required.  If tarot isn’t your style, you can also try many flavors of hookah.

They also offer an extensive menu of delicious Mediterranean fare, as well as gelato.  The customers are a reflection of all that is unique about this café.  And, with Nina Simone setting the tone, what better place to relax and pass a couple hours?
