Star E Rose, 2403 NE Alberta St., Portland

So just where do the hippie freaks, punks, anarchists and rogue artists that make up the Alberta community I've come to know and love go to drink java, play chess, and chat? I didn't even realize I was searching for the quintessential Alberta St. coffee shop until I found it...ahhh...I'm home...

Relaxed and unpretentious. The sound of bluegrass fills the room. Bright colors, endless ceilings and wood floors, mismatched chairs and tables, and stained glass brighten up this beautiful old building. And yes, the coffee is good (Kobos organic). The pastries and light cafe fare are fresh and delicious and include vegan Voodoo donuts, quiche, bagel sandwiches, paninis, and a potato plate that you can pile high with your choice of toppings. There is a computer in the back that one can use, though I couldn't seem to get the wireless to work on my laptop (though I fully admit this could be do to user error). If you love the diverse Alberta community as I do, I highly recommend making the Star E Rose your home away from home.
